Classroom Management and Course Organization

Classroom Management

Whether you've taught for 20 years or two years, every year provides classroom management challenges. Teaching online can present a whole new challenge when it comes to classroom management. So, what can you do to keep control of your virtual classroom?

Here are some simple best practices to keep your classroom running smoothly:

  • Ensure you understand how to use your technology.
  • Start your students off slowly! Don’t assume that they all know how to behave in an online environment.
  • Build community within your classroom.
  • Establish a routine.
  • Know your options in terms of muting disruptive students as well as your school’s discipline procedures.

Course Organization

Organizing an online classroom can sound intimidating at first. Especially when you are so used to grabbing books off of bookshelves, reaching into a drawer to pull out worksheets from years prior, and taking center materials out of your classroom cabinets.

How can you take what you are used to and refocus your attention to your online classroom?

  • Bookmark any links to resources so you can easily refer back to them in the future.
  • Build digital folders with digital copies of the resources you utilize in your face to face classroom.
  • Schedule your time and create a routine. Working from home on a computer can make it feel as though you are always on call.
  • Scheduling out time to do lesson plans, grade work, and create learning activities for your students will help create a work-life balance.
  • Create an outline to refer to during live lessons.
  • Develop a support system with your fellow educators.
  • Set a time to meet once a week to decompress, share ideas, and chat about what has worked for you and what has not.
